Bus AC & Cooling System Care for UAE Summers

In a UAE summer, a bus with weak air conditioning quickly becomes a complaint, and a bus that overheats becomes a breakdown. Outside temperatures often pass 45°C, and the engine cooling and passenger AC both run near their limits for months.

A little preparation before summer prevents most of these failures. Here is what to check and which parts to keep ready.

Two systems, one heat problem

• Engine cooling keeps the engine at a safe temperature. Its main parts are the radiator, water pump, thermostat, cooling fan, hoses and coolant.
• Passenger air conditioning keeps the cabin cool. Its main parts are the compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, blower fans, filters and drive belts.

Both depend on moving air through clean fins and on belts in good condition. Dust and heat attack both.

Signs your bus cooling or AC needs attention

• The temperature gauge climbs on long climbs or in traffic.
• Coolant level drops between services, or there are coolant stains under the bus.
• The AC blows cool but not cold, especially in the afternoon.
• The AC compressor clutch cycles on and off rapidly, or makes a grinding noise.
• A squeal at start-up, which usually means a worn or loose drive belt.
• A musty smell from the vents, which points to a blocked cabin filter or evaporator.

Pre-summer checklist

• ☐ Clean radiator and condenser fins of dust and sand, from the engine side outwards.
• ☐ Pressure-test the cooling system and check all hoses and clamps.
• ☐ Replace the coolant if it is due, using the grade in the manual.
• ☐ Inspect drive belts for cracks and glazing, and check tension.
• ☐ Replace cabin and AC filters.
• ☐ Check the AC refrigerant pressure and look for oil stains that point to leaks.
• ☐ Test all condenser and blower fans.
